SHILLONG, NOV 16: The press fraternity in Meghalaya celebrated the “National Press Day” by organizing a workshop and also writing competition in English and Khasi for the print as well as electronic media on Saturday.

The Press Council of India (PCI) had chosen “Role of the media in serving public interest” as this year’s theme for the National Press Day. A training program for the journalists on enhancing writing skills was also conducted by Mumbai based Journalism Mentor Foundation Alok Thakur.

The Shillong Press Club (SPC) in collaboration with the Meghalaya directorate for information & public relations also organized a news writing competition.

Speaking at the inaugural session of the National Press Day, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly speaker AT Mondal, who graced the occasion as chief guest, said that the media and democracy are like the two sides of the same coin even as he said that the Indian constitution ensures the freedom of speech but cautioned journalists not to cross the boundary line and infringe into the privacy of others.

Speaking about the opinion polls conducted by broadcast as well as print media during the elections, Mondal felt that such polls should not be allowed as most of it misleads and influence the public to vote for a particular party or politicians.

East Khasi Hills deputy commissioner Sanjay Goyal stressed on the importance of free and responsible media while stating that the media is expected to follow high standards while discharging their duties.

He also urged journalists to be authentic while reporting as he felt that the press in India does not have restriction on fair and accurate reporting.

Goyal also requested journalists to be fair while reporting by giving both sides of the story.

In the evening a valedictory function was held where the Meghalaya home minister Roshan Warjri was the chief guest and legislator Paul Lyngdoh the guest of honour. Additional chief secretary PBO Warjri was also present. – By Our Reporter
