Drunkard voter, poll goondas

SHILLONG, FEB 24: In another incident of drunkard poll officer, the  presiding officer Trangly Khsiar of Mawkhlam polling station under Nongstoin constituency in West Khasi hills district was found drunk during elections duty on Monday.

Trangly Khsiar, who is an assistant engineer of the Nongstoin C&RD block, has been taken under police custody.

DCA department Commissioner & Secretary Jopthiaw Lyngdoh said, “We have directed the returning officers to lodge a strong complaint against such erring officials and ensure that departmental action are taken against them and will be suspended for dereliction of duty.”

Even as the state government had declared dry days for the district council elections, a voter identified as Edmund Lyngdoh who was already in a drunkard state was arrestedon Monday for threatening the presiding officer of the 5th Mile polling station when he was ask to produce his EPIC card when he had gone to cast his vote, , DIG Eastern Range A Sunn told reporters.

The presiding officer detained his EPIC card after he castehis vote and filed complaint with the police who immediately took action under 506 IPC.

In another poll incident two members of Hynniewtrep National People’s Front (HNPF) including its president were assaulted by angry villagers for allegedly trying to disrupt the polling in a village under East Jaintia Hills District.

Identified as Ronnie Rani, president of HNPF from Kenches Trace and member Teiborlin Wanniang from Mawiong had gone to Moolamanoh polling station under Moosniang –Rangat constituency and were assaulted by villagers outside the premises of the polling station. However, they were rescued by police personnel, Sunn said.

In another poll violation instance five voters were prevented from voting by a sordar at Thangbna polling station under Nongkrem constituency just because they were arrested earlier in connection with a murder case, Sunn said.

The deprived voters, however, called up the SP and informed him about the matter. SP immediately sent police personnel to the polling station.

Out of five, only three managed to cast their votes after police escorted them to the polling booth. The other two however left the place when they were prevented by the sordar, Sunn informed. –By Our Reporter
