Of vanquished leaders and a rising son

charles pyngropeSHILLONG, FEB 28:  Meghalaya assembly speaker and Congress candidate Charles Pyngrope, Opposition leader and NPP leader Conrad Sangma and Meghalaya deputy chief minister and United Democratic Party (UDP) working president Bindo M Lanong lost their respective seats.

Pyngrope who contested from the post delimitation constituency Nongthymmai lost to his UDP rival Jemino Mawthoh. Mawthoh who had contest the 2008 election as an NCP candidate had lost to Bindo M Lanong. However after the delimitation, Lanong contested from Shillong East constituency against Congress candidate Ampareen Lyngdoh and lost to her.

Incidentally, Charles Pyngrope’s son David Nongrum who contested the Mawryngkneng constituency won even as his father who is a two times MLA lost the election. For Nongrum this is the first time he had taken a plunge in electoral politics and won as an Independent candidate after he was denied ticket by the Congress.

In Garo hills, it might have a been a shock for former Lok Sabha speaker and NPP leader Purno A Sangma as his youngest son and Opposition leader in Meghalaya assembly Conrad Sangma lost the Selsella seat to Congress candidate Clement Marak. However, the eldest son and NPP candidate James Sangma won against his nearest Independent candidate Ismail R Marak from Dadenggre constituency.

In South Shillong constituency, Congress candidate and former Education minister Manas Chaudhuri lost to his NCP rival and Meghalaya deputy speaker Sanbor Shullai.- By Our Reporter
