Shillong, Dec. 21: The Mumbai-based ONGC will be hoping its adopted home ground will again prove lucky as they lock horns with Shillong Lajong FC in match no 12 of their I-League campaign at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi on Saturday.
All the 7 points ONGC has managed to garner in the league so far have come in their adopted home ground, having won against Dempo SC, and drawn against Prayag United, Mohun Bagan and Sporting Clube de Goa. The Santoh Kashyap-coached team is so much at home in Delhi that they don’t seem to be missing Mumbai at all.
“We intend for a top-7 finish. One has to be optimistic. A top-7 finish is a realistic target,” said Kashyap, who take charge of the team recently. “If you carefully look at the table, there’s not much difference between the teams. But yeah, I must admit, the first aim it to avoid relegation.”
“It’s true that I have inherited the squad but it’s a talented bunch. I have just had two sessions with them and there are some areas which need to be plugged. I’m happy with the fitness level of the boys and also the team spirit. The best part is all are available against Lajong and there aren’t any card problems,” said Kashyap.
Shillong Lajong FC, who rely on ‘direct football’, are on 13 points from 11 matches. They have had some inspiring results but have been inconsistent.“Apart from the top-5, I don’t feel there’s much difference between the teams in the bottom-half,” felt Kashyap, adding: “I intend to build up a specific style of play. We want to stress upon possession and build up from the back. I want my players to be more confident.”
