SHILLONG, JULY 21: Opposition chief whip George B Lyngdoh on Thursday sought the intervention of the Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan for immediate release of the salary of over 12,500 SSA teachers in Meghalaya.
In his letter to Pradhan, Lyngdoh said regular and timely receipt of wages is basic human rights and that we cannot make our citizens toil without giving them their dues.
He said going by the media statements given by the Government of Meghalaya, it is being informed that the MoE has been withholding the funds and thereby we have a pathetic situation where the rights of our SSA teachers are being deprived.
“I want to understand the reasons as to why the MoE has been withholding the SSA funds of Meghalaya?” he asked.
“If the delay is on behalf of the Ministry of Education (MoE), I strongly appeal to your honour to kindly intervene to ensure that the SSA funds due to Meghalaya are released at the earliest and to resolve the ongoing agitation which would encourage our teachers to return to their respective schools,” Lyngdoh requested.
He informed that the SSA teachers have been agitating for the past four days.
The opposition chief whip said that the prolonged and repeated delay in paying the salaries has brought numerous hardships to the SSA teaching and non-teaching staff and more than 20,000 families are being affected.
The teachers have to borrow from their family members, neighbours and friends just to pay the travel fare to reach their school and also to feed their families, he said.
