Opp demands action against SSA school for charging fees

SHILLONG, SEP 13: Opposition All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) legislator from Mawsynram Himalaya Shangpliang on Tuesday demanded the government to probe into the alleged charging of fees by a SSA school in Ri Bhoi district.

“I would like to bring to the notice of the minister that there is a school named Nongrim Byrni Presbyterian Secondary School in Ri Bhoi, which is considered to be an SSA government school. I am surprised how the managing committee of this school is charging fees from the students to the tune of Rs 2,500 to Rs 3,000 a month. Aren’t it government schools supposed to be free of cost? I am bringing this to the notice of the minister. May he kindly look into this and get it inquired,” Shangpliang said while participating during a short duration discussion on the plight of the education sector in the state.

He further alleged that the school does not have qualified teachers teaching particularly in the class IX and X .

“The students are made to read from the help books. The teachers come and they say this is the help book you read this,” Shangpliang added.

Meanwhile, the Mawsynram legislator also urged the government to address the issues related to the midday meal workers. He said it is never heard that such people should also come out to the streets to protest.

“I request the minister to pay attention to the demands of the midday meal workers. Why are we asking with woods when they should be cooking with LPG gas? The government should provide LPG gas,” he said. He also demanded the government to speed up the appointment of the LP school contractual teachers who have cleared the MTET exams.
