SHILLONG, JUNE 24: The elections of the KHADC deputy chairperson Gabriel Wahlang has raked-up a controversy as two former Chief Executive Member (CEMs,)  both from the opposition ARPA, and the council’s chairperson did not take part in the customary address to felicitate Wahlang after he was elected unopposed to the post on Wednesday.

Failure of the two CEMs- Ardent Basaiawmoit and Adelbert Nongrum- and chairperson Teilinia Thangkhiew- who also belongs to the opposition- to take part in the customary felicitation address after the deputy chairman is being seen as deviation from the customary practices that have so long been the norm in KHADC.

Only ARPA leader Metbah Lyngdoh and MDC Rona Khymdeit besides few other members from the opposition bench took part in the felicitation session of the deputy chairman.

Earlier, soon after the council’s chairperson Teilinia Thangkhiew made the announcement, only the Chief Executive Member (CEM) PN Syiem and EM incharge Finance Antonio N War was seen escorting the new deputy chairman to his chair next to the chairperson.

Sources in the ruling PDF said that as per convention in the district council, the CEM and the opposition leader are supposed to escort the deputy chairman.

However, none of the members from the opposition ARPA come forward to escort the newly elected chairperson. Ruling PDF members expressed concern over the attitude of the two CEMs and even the chairperson who refused to speak and take part in the felicitation of the new deputy chairperson.- By Our Reporter
