Ostracization: Police denial

SHILLONG, AUG 8: The Ri Bhoi district police have denied the allegation of Slodian Kurbah, a farmer by profession and a single mother of seven children from Umtangi, who had accused the police of not taking any action against the village dorbar who ostracized her along with her family and few villagers.

Slodian Kurbah, was allegedly ostracized by the village dorbar of Umtangi  after she objected to the move of the village leaders to allegedly take away the agricultural land belonging to the family and converting it into a village forest.

The district police, however, claimed that prompt action was taken after the victim had filed an FIR.

According to police, it is a case of land dispute between the dorbar and the lady and soon after the matter came to the light of the police, a police officer went to the village and investigated into the matter.

Kurbah had filed an FIR with the Umsning police outpost against the village authority on June 28

Police said that it is a non FIR case and Kurbah too has not mentioned anything about the alleged ostracization in the FIR which was lodged with the police.

Police informed that the matter is pending with the court and police does not have the authority to decide on the matter.

It is also alleged that the village dorbar had destroyed and damaged the family’s agricultural land measuring over 2 acres and the ginger produce on June 4.

The police is now contemplating to either ask her to lodge a fresh complaint of ostracization or register a suo moto case based on the media reports about the alleged ostracization.

After Kurbah refused to part with her agricultural land, the village dorbar allegedly passed a decision prohibiting her and her family from using the village drinking water, road, and other activities because she had dared to defy their illegal decision and filed a complaint against them.- By Our Reporter
