“Pay compensation to victim”

SHILLONG, MAR 13:  East Garo Hills ngos have threatened to intensify their agitation to ensure that the kin of Washington Marak, who was allegedly killed in a fake encounter four years ago, is paid compensation. The ngos also wants action against the erring police officers led by DSP TC Chacko and ensure that they are punished according to the law of the land.

Late Washington N Marak, who was a carpenter, was killed in an encounter with the police when police swooped down on his village in East Gar hills district. The operation was led by TC Chacko, who was then posted in the district.

A few days after his killing, it became apparent that the person killed was a carpenter and not a GNLA militant. The NHRC who inquired into the killing directed the Meghalaya government to provide compensation to the family of the victim as Marak was killed in fake police encounter.

GSU general secretary John Miltu asserted that they want the victim’s family to be compensated and the erring police officers punished. Even after two years of the NHRC direction the state government is yet to follow the directive. The ngos have also started poster campaign to put pressure on the administration. – By Our Reporter
