PBM on HNLC ceasefire

SHILLONG, AUG 21: Even as Rev PBM Basaiawmoit, a church leader and also a politician, welcome the offer made by the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) for bilateral ceasefire to the Meghalaya government but he denied the allegation by the outfit that he was threatened by the then chief minister DD Lapang when he was appointed as a mediator between the government and the HNLC years ago.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Basaiawmoit said, “I  categorically  state that  I  was  never  threatened by  Lapang  or  any  minister  on  the  issue of  the peace talks  between  the union  and  state governments  with  HNLC. We might  have  different  political  ideologies  but  we  respect each  other.”

Basaiawmoit statement follows the HNLC’s allegation that “Rev PBM Basiawmoit who was acting as our mediator was also in fact threatened by DD Lapang.”

Basaiawmoit informed that in fact the earlier effort for a peace talk failed because the central government blotched it up.

The HNLC recently expressed its willingness to come under the bilateral ceasefire agreement.  On this Basaiawmoit said, “The  HNLC  is ready  to  hold  talks  with  the  Government  without  any pre-condition  is  very  much  appreciated  as  it  is  a big  come  down  from  its  earlier  stand.”

Basaiawmoit, however, pointed out that initiative to bring the HNLC for peace talks in 2004 was let down by the centre.

Basaiawmoit also wished that the  efforts to bring  about peace by holding peace talk with HNLC becomes a  definite  success  and  urge  all concerned  including stakeholders  to  be  sincere on the issue.- By Our Reporter
