PDA raises objection

SHILLONG, MAR 28: The ruling People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) in the KHADC today raised objection against the continuation of a former Congress member as the Leader of Opposition even after he had joined the HSPDP, which is having only 3 MDCs.

The issue was raised by Equator Nongrang, member of UDP, who is supporting the executive committee, during the ongoing Council’s session held here on Wednesday.

In support to this, KHADC chief Pynshngain N Syiem asked under what rule, the HSPDP member from Langrin Manstudy Nongrem still enjoys as the Opposition Leader of the House because as per rules 1/6th is required.

He however pointed out but Nongrem had recently joined the Hill State People Democratic Party (HSPDP) which is having only three members adding the other opposition parties like Congress is having only 4 MDCs and the UDP with 3 MDCs.

“This will create a bad precedence because anything we do should be guided by the rules,” Syiem said while also wanted to know the name of the opposition coalition in the district council.

Defending himself, Nongrem however said that the matter is for the Chairman of the House to decide.

Congress member from Sohra Donevan Wanlang urged the Chairman to give in writing for the opposition to discuss and take a call on the matter.

Giving his ruling, KHADC chairman LG Nongsiej, while informing that he is yet to receive any letter about Nongrem’s joining the HSPDP, assured that his office will take necessary action on the matter.
