People’s positive action

TURA, MAY 7: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma on Thursday launched a programme for people’s positive social action under Border Areas Development (BAD) at Ampati in South West Garo Hills.

The objective of the programme is to mobilize the youth for harnessing their talents in sports and other productive activities. The scheme will be implemented across the state.

Speaking on the occasion Sangma said that the launch of this programme is an offshoot of the social action initiated by a group of people in this part of the state after the area was subjected to some negative situation. This group, responding to the call to ensure that people go ahead with their daily activities, had organized a cricket tournament and managed to solicit participation of 54 clubs in just two days.

“If there are people who are available to engage themselves in such positive social action under adverse circumstances then it is imperative for the government to carry it forward in a bigger way through appropriate platform. Therefore we tried to locate some funds and found that there was fund available under BAD. And since it is an offshoot of the social positive action coming from the people themselves, we thought it appropriate to name it People’s Positive Social Action Programme”, he said.

Sangma also said that the programme should be taken in complete understanding of social positive action in sync with the constitution that gives limitless possibilities that can add to the vibrancy and growth of the

nation. Besides sporting activities, the programme should be integrated with various other activities that bring positive outcome, he added.

Under this Social Positive Action Programme, he said people should also take care of the environmental concerns and informed that a “Greening Campaign” would be taken up with tree plantations in every school, every household and every village in the district for continuous three days in the month of May. “When people are talking about smart cities, the concept of our government is to have the most livable habitations, towns and cities and that can come only through social
positive action”, he said.

Informing the gathering that the government was coming up with a programme with special focus on football, Sangma called upon the people to form football clubs in every village and asked the district administration to come up with a format to ensure a more inclusive club over the years and maintain the beauty and charm of football.

Speaking about his recent trip to Israel where he learnt about a community system called Kibbutz, Sangmao said that the concept can be replicated in every district in the state, dovetail it according to given situation, potentialities and work out a format to have a kind of community business to promote livelihood.

Sangma also made a token distribution of sports articles and gears to the selected sports clubs of the district.– From Our Correspondent
