Plans to decongest Iewduh

SHILLONG, MAY 11: The new executive committee of the Hima Mylliem has asked vendors and shopkeepers in Iewduh market not to encroach into public space because.   The decision was taken after an inspection of Iewduh, considered to be one of the biggest traditional markets in the state, conducted by the Acting Syiem Ricky Nelson Syiem along with his myntris (ministers) yesterday.

However the intention of the Hima to decongest the market was misunderstood and nearly hundreds of traders and vendors marched to the hima office to protest against the decision.

“We have told them that the effort is to resolve the present congestion problem in the market,” Myntri in-charge Finance Baswell Nongneng Shanpru told reporters.

He said based on several complaints by public, the Hima under leadership of the acting Syiem decided to conduct the inspection in the market.

It was found that public space have been encroached by vendors and also shopkeepers, who were seen keeping their items outside their shops, Shanpru said.

He said this has largely contributed to the congestion problem whereby people visiting the market are subjected to inconveniences.

There are several lanes inside the market are very narrow.

“In view of this, we have decided to direct the vendors and shopkeepers not to encroach into public space,” he said while urging them to cooperate and support the Hima on this regard.

Shanpru also said that the initiative of the Hima should not be misunderstood as it is mainly to ensure that public space is free from congestion.-By Our Reporter
