SHILL/TURA JUNE 16: In a major setback to the Garo militant outfit – Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), its deputy chairman Rapiush Ch Sangma was arrested by Meghalaya and Bengaluru police from his residence at Bengaluru on Monday morning.

Meghalaya IG (operation) GHP Raju informed that the GNLA deputy chairman was arrested during a joint operation by Meghalaya police and its Bengaluru counterpart. Raju informed, “The GNLA deputy chairman has been hiding in Bangaluru and is receiving money through bank transfers and withdrawing his money using ATM cards and leading a luxurious life.”

In 2013 Meghalaya assembly elections,  Sangma had contested from Rongjeng assembly constituency on Samajwadi Party ticket and lost his deposit. He could garner only 1604 votes. Informing that Sangma had spent a lot of money during the elections, Raju said, “He (Sangma) was desperate to earn money he had spent back by hook or by crook and he decided to join the GNLA for making quick money and to recoup the monetary loss incurred during the elections.”

GNLA Commander In Chief (C-in-C) Sohan D Shira had welcomed Sangma into GNLA and made him the deputy chairman of the outfit, Raju said. During the raid, the police recovered 20 black SIM cards, laptop, tablet, 9 mobile phones from his residence.

On preliminary interrogation, Sangma has confessed that he regularly receives money from Sohan, Raju said. Terming Sangma as the most wanted criminal, he said that the arrested militants’ leader has been instrumental in planning all kidnappings, extortions and other anti social activities in Garo hills region. Sangma is likely to be brought to Meghalaya after all the legal formalities are completed in Bengaluru.- Bureau report
