Police outpost at Barato soon

SHILLONG, MAR 9: The state government is considering setting up a police outpost at Barato village and a fire service station under Laskein Block in West Jaintia Hills district.
“The government is actively considering setting up the police outpost at Barato village…and fire service station at Raliang,” Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said while replying to a query raised by UDP legislator Nujorki Sungoh in the Assembly on Tuesday.
He also informed that the Raliang has already given a gift deed for setting up the fire service station in the village.
Sungoh while requesting the government to speed up the process said that students from Barato are facing hardships as they have to appear for their examination at Mookyndeng and Shangpung which are 30 km and 37 km respectively.
“The reason being when we approached the education department for setting up of an (SSLC) examination centre since we have at least five secondary schools, the reply was that it cannot be done as there is no police station and no bank in the area (for securely keeping the question papers),” it said.
On this, the minister said that the process is on and the outpost will be set up at an appropriate time.
The Mookaiaw MLA has also sought assurance of the minister in regards to the fire service station as the constituency is totally dependent on fire service station from Jowai, the district headquarter in case of fire incidents.
“From 2016 to 2019, there are 21 cases of fire incidents that have happened in my constituency. This is because from Jowai to my constituency, the fire service will take minimum 2 hours to reach the spot and by the time they reach nothing is left as everything is burnt to ashes,” he said.
The minister reiterated the commitment of the government and said the setting up of the fire service station would mitigate the problems faced by the people.
Regarding the concern expressed by KHNAM legislator from North Shillong Adelbert Nongrum on the problems caused by narrow lanes and roads in tackling fire incidents in Shillong, Rymbui admitted that accessibility is a very important for fire service to reach the spot in time. He also urged the need to plan villages and towns in such a way these types of situations could be avoided.
