Posting objectionable explicit content is an offence: SP

SHILLONG, APR 28: Misusing of social media by sharing and circulating objectionable explicit content on individual person(s) are punishable by law as per the provisions of Information Technology Act, 2000 and Indian Penal Code.

“Such irresponsible posts can bring about immense harm to the person who is being targeted. Hence, the general public is advised to refrain from vilifying persons using social media,” East Khasi Hills district police chief Davis NR Marak said in a statement issued here.

The appeal was made in view of the rising trend amongst the general public to post/share objectionable explicit content online and social media on individual persons as well as rumors on social media platforms such as Facebook, Whatsapp and Youtube.

He said that recently an explicit video clip of a girl was posted and shared on Facebook, which has caused distress to both the victim and her family members.

The SP also said it is advised that anyone having information on any racket should immediately report the matter to the police who can verify the same and take action on the matter.

“It is also advised to all public especially the youth to restrain from capturing images or any act of their dear and loved ones and disseminate to the third person or post on social media without their consent as this is an offense,” he said.

According to him, some persons without verification of the content unscrupulously posted, share, spread and maliciously post comments on some unverified posts.
