Preserving folk legacy

SHILLONG, NOV 16: All India Radio has embarked on a special project with the objective of preserving, propagating and promoting our folk legacy.   India is a classic case in ethno-linguistic diversity.

It is a challenging task to capture her cultural mosaic in all its variegated hues. It is best reflected in the abundant and rich folklore of its numerous regions, communities and cultures.  The scintillating lyrics and tunes have a distinct flavor but are under threat of extinction.

AIR, as the nation’s public service broadcaster, has decided to step in and record the folklore and ceremonial songs, in their pristine purity.

The project envisages recording (1) songs associated with different rituals that is sanskars   stages/milestones in the life span of a person (2) a variety of  lok geets such as ritu geet, parv geet, shram geet, nadi geet, vriksh geet, sthal geet, parvat geet and andolan geet and (3) lok gaathayein, that is and folk legends.

AIR, Shillong will organise a workshop on Monday, the 17th November, 2014 at State Convention Centre, Pine Wood, Shillong to operationalise the project and gain an insight into the rich heritage with such details as customs, folk tales, folk songs in different languages/dialects prevalent among various castes, sub-castes, tribes and other communities.

Programme heads of all regional stations of  North Eastern States including Sikkim, as also Mammu & Kashmir, Haryana, Andaman & Nicobar Island and Lakshadweep are required to attend the workshop, along with information relating to the aforesaid  folk songs, legends. as far as their region is concerned.- By Our Reporter
