Privilege motion admitted against editor

SHILLONG, MAR 24: A privilege motion against an editor of a leading local English daily was admitted by Meghalaya Assembly Speaker Abu Taher Mondal today.

On the ultimate day of the budget session, Opposition member John Leslee K. Sangma moved the privilege motion against the editor for an article which was published on March 17.

According to Sangma, the editor had criticised and ridiculed the issues raised by the legislators during the session which ended today.

Moving the motion, the legislator said, “The article published by her (editor) has breached the privilege of the House and the privilege of the members.”

He also pointed out by saying, “Her article contains statements which insinuate that the members are debating on issues which are not in public interest; ridiculed publicly the issues raised and tried to create an opinion to lower the prestige of the House and all its members.”

Appealing to the Speaker to admit the motion, the Independent legislator said, “Her actions amounts to obstruction of the rights of the members to raise issues which are of utmost public importance in the House.”

While admitting the motion, the Speaker referred the matter to the Privilege Committee for examination and investigation.
