Shillong, October 15: The thirteen pro-Inner Line Permit (ILP) ngos has call for a twenty-four hours statewide “bandh” on October 17 as part of their agitation demanding the implementation of the ILP in the state to check influx and illegal immigration. The bandh will be effective from 5 am on October 17 to 5 am on October 18.

The decision was taken at a meeting held at an undisclosed location on Tuesday after they had temporarily suspended their agitations in view of the festivities.

Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) vice president Frederick Kharmawphlang said over the phone, “Our stand is the same. We will continue to intensify our stir till the state government implements the ILP in the state.”

The agitatios of the pro ILP ngos had started since September 4 following the failure of their talk with the state government on August 29.

The ngos have been demanding that the Meghalaya government should implement the ILP to check unabated inflow of illegal migrants and influx into the state and honour the recommendation of the High Level Committee on Influx (HLCI) headed by the then Deputy Chief Minister Bindo M Lanong.

Kharmawphlang said, “We are willing to have a dialogue with the state government provided that the issue should be only on ILP but will not accept if the government calls us for dialogue on some other mechanism.”

Kharmawphlang also informed that Tuesday’s meeting of the ngos also expressed concern over the random arrest made by the state police against the members and volunteers of the different ngos. He said,“The police have arbitrary arrested and booked our members under different sections without verifying which is not at all acceptable.”

Kharmawphlang said that the ngos will meet soon to chalk out their future agitation programme as long as the state government remains adamant to their demand.- By Our Reporter
