SHILLONG, SEPT 22: Even as Meghalaya health minister AL Hek conceded that most of the doctors are reluctant to work in the rural areas but assured that disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against those found neglecting their duties.

On Tuesday, UDP legislator TW Chyne tabled a motion in the assembly on the healthcare system in the state.

While replying to Chyne Hek admitted, “Many doctors do not want to join (their duties) whenever they get a rural posting. This is a regular problem in the health department.” He said there is a shortage of staff in the healthcare centres with the number of doctors pegged at 743 doctors in the state.

Hek said Meghalaya has 12 hospitals, 28 community health centres, 110 primary health centres, 13 dispensaries, 19 urban health centres, and 422 health sub-centres even as he informed that the construction of a 100-bedded civil hospital at Khliehriat in East Jaintia Hills, Mawkyrwat in South West Khasi Hills, and Ampati in South West Garo Hills is going on.

A new 100-bedded maternal and child hospital is also being constructed at Jowai to cater to the needs of the people residing in the Jaintia Hills, Hek added.

On the issue relating to medicines, Hek informed medicines are procured based on the requirements prepared by the head of the institution (hospitals and districts) and every effort was being made to ensure that there is no shortage of drugs and consumables.- By Our Reporter
