Ngos serve quit notices

NONGSTOIN, AUG 18: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU)-Lyngngam Hynneng Brei unit-and Nongtre Lyngngam Achik Youth Federation (NLAYF)  served a 10-day deadline to “outsiders” to leave Shallang area in West Khasi Hills.

Accusing the “outsiders” for spoiling the peace and tranquility of the area, thethe two ngos has warned of “action” if the outsiders failed to leave Shallang area within the deadline.

The decision to issue the deadline was taken in a meeting held at Umdang in Shallang area on August 16.

Outsiders in the district were served with such “quit notice” on several occasions in the past, especially during the post-Langpih clashes in 2010.

“We don’t want our people to mingle with outsiders as it spoils the relation among us and violates the tradition and custom,” said Stelius Rongrin, president of the KSU Lyngngam Hynneng Brei Area unit. He said the presence of the outsiders, who have tried to capture the Khasi land in the area, has been a threat to the people living in the area.

“Many unwanted incidents are taking place in Shallang due to presence of outsiders in the area,” alleged Shainingstar K Dewsaw, president of NLAYF. Warning the outsiders to leave the place immediately, he warned that the two ngos will not be responsible if anything take place the deadline expires.

Dewsaw also warned that those who try to hide will be responsible if anything happened to them.

The ngos  accused the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) for not taking any steps to check the trading license of non-tribal traders at Shallang.  Therefore, the two ngos also decided to conduct a checking drive against outsiders in the area on August 26 when the deadline will be over.- By Our Reporter
