SHILLONG, SEPT 2: Thousands of public and private sectors workers and employees in the state on Friday took to the city streets as part of nationwide strike to protest against the anti-people and anti-workers policies of the Modi government.

Traffic in the capital came to a standstill as the workers participated in the rally organized by the Meghalaya Joint Council of Trade Unions & Associations (MJCTUA) here on Friday.

“The rally has resolved to urge the state government of Meghalaya to take concrete measures to control the price rise,” MJCTUA president MN Bhattacharjee said.

He said that the government is also demanded to fix minimum support price for agricultural products of the state thereby giving adequate relief to the poor farmers of the state.

Spelling out the 12-point charter of demands, the MJCTUA leader said we demand the union government to contain unemployment through concrete measure for employment generation.

The government at the centre is also demanded to strictly enforce the basic labour laws without any exception or exemption and stringent punitive measure for violation of labour laws besides universal social security cover for all workers, he said.

The other demands includes – minimum wage of not less than Rs 18,000 per month, assured enhanced pension not less than Rs 3000 per month, stoppage of disinvestment in centre/state public sector undertaking and contractorisation in permanent work, removal of all ceilings on payment and eligibility of bonus, provident fund and increase in quantum of gratuity, compulsory registration of trade unions within a period of 45 days, no FDI in railways, defence and no unilateral amendment of labour laws.-By Our Reporter
