SHILLONG, MAY 21: Meghalaya governor Krishan Kant Paul underscored the need to regenerate the “reading habit” among the people especially the younger generation as it is declining because of the influence of the new media.
“We need to bring back the reading habit. Such habit has to be cultivated right from younger age,” Paul said. According to him, children in today’s generation are hooked up to cell-phones, television and computer (CTC).
Paul expressed his concern during the inaugural function of the two-day Creative Arts, Literature and Music (CALM) Festival 2014 held at State Central Library on Wednesday.
Urging the participants of the festival to come up with some innovative ideas on the issue , Paul suggested the need to explore the possibility of using such mediums as the CTC to promote the reading habit.
“Let us not forget that we need good readers to appreciate good writing and buy books,” Paul observed.
Paul also stressed the need to give more emphasis to local languages to help bring out the best in creative arts and literature.
Delivering his keynote address, Managing Director of the Team Work Sanjay Roy said it is high time to realize the incredible value of “Arts” as it not only create intangible but also contribute to the economic wealth of a place.
Roy, also the producer of the Raipur literary festival said, “Such creative arts festivals are economic preposition and what we need is for the government to create infrastructure which will create opportunities to artists who writes or performs.”
Roy informed a country like America had earned around 11.7 billion dollar as an additional revenue by taking up such festivals and similarly in Jaipur one of the twenty-three festivals organized this year on January managed to bring in Rs 16 to 20 crore.
Pointing out that north east people face many problems in mainstream India; Roy said because how far the people from the region been able to take their cultures beyond the boundary of the region.
Organized by the State Arts and Culture department in collaboration with the Sahaki Society, the event aims at creating awareness and expose the youth to the world of creativity and artistic expression which includes class artist paths, the fine arts, such as literature, music, drama and other performing arts along with the traditional crafts.- By Our Reporter
