Regional parties one with Cong: Syiem

By Our Reporter

SHILLONG, JUNE 22: KHADC chief Pynshngain N Syiem today accused the opposition regional political parties of being one with the Congress, which have failed in their “desparate” attempt to topple the PDF-led executive committee.

“They are one – the HSPDP is a Congress and the UDP too is a Congress but despite the desparate attempt made, yet they fail to defeat the present EC,” Syiem told reporters after the council’s session which concluded here.

Earlier during the session, the ruling People Democratic Forum (PDF) led EC survived after the opposition members refused to initiate discussion on the No-confidence motion and instead staged a protest walkout.

They (opposition) have accused the Council’s Chairman LG Nongsiej of bending the rules for the convenience of someone (EC). Prior to this, the opposition had also recalled the NC submitted to the Chairman yesterday citing this is to ensure that the passing of the budget is not affected.

Terming the reason as a lame excuse on the part of the opposition, he said, “Their action is nothing but childish and it only reflected that they have no principle but are desparate to be in power.”

On the allegation made by the regional parties on misusing of the PDF (Forum) to form the PDF (Front), a new political party allegedly led by the KHADC CEM himself, Syiem denied by saying that none of the members of the Forum have joined the Front as alleged.

“I am still a suspended Congress member and all members of the forum have not joined any Front. Only time will tell where we will be,” he said.

The CEM also claimed that the ruling PDF in the KHADC has become a major threat to the political parties not because it is dividing them but because of its door that is kept open for everyone.

Referring to the recent pre-poll alliance of the UDP and HSPDP, Syiem said, “This (pre-poll alliance) is not to counter against the Congress but it is against the new political party, which is being floated by someone.”

On the  claim of the Congress that the EC has been defeated by accepting a resolution to oppose the Centre’s notification on cow slaughter, he said that but they have to understand that to topple the EC they need 15 in the house of 29.

He further expressed happiness after passing of the Budget, which he termed as a unique one as it included provisions for the Council’s staff and ex-members.

Meanwhile, UDP MDC from Nongkrem Hispreaching Son Shylla accused the Chief Minister Mukul Sangma to be the main reason behind the attempt to topple the Syiem led EC in the KHADC.
