Regional parties to win 32-33 seats: Ardent

SHILLONG, FEB 5: Hill State People Democratic Party (HSPDP) supremo Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit today exuded confidence that the regional force will cross the magic number to form the new government after the Assembly polls.

“We are hopeful to win 32-33 seats,” Basaiawmoit, a sitting legislator of Nongkrem constituency told reporters after filing his nominations along with a host of his party’s candidates from different constituencies here in the city on Monday.

The HSPDP has forged a pre-poll alliance with the United Democratic Party (UDP) for contesting from the 36 Assembly seats in Khasi and Jaintia Hills region.

While the HSPDP has field 13 candidates, its partner the UDP has so far announced as many as 35 candidates which include those from Garo Hills region (consisting of 24 seats), where it has an alliance with the Garo National Council (GNC).

Asked on the allegation that people are fed up with the regional parties in the state, Basaiawmoit however said, “Whether that is true or not, we will see on March 3(counting day) but we as a party we are confident to win from all the 13 seats.”

On the chief ministerial candidate, the HSPDP chief however said that the matter will be decided jointly between the regional parties after the Assembly polls.

With regards to the party’s election manifesto, he said that it would soon be released and the gist of it is that the party aims at bringing clean and corruption free governance in the state.

“It is only through this that we can have an effective and efficient government,”  Basaiawmoit said.

Highlighting on the other priorities of the party, he said the party also aims at bringing strong and effective laws to protect and safeguard the interest of the people of the state besides focussing on addressing problems faced by unemployed youths and women.

Promotion of tourism in the state is also one among the main issues of the party, he added.
