Resolution for removal of Speaker an attempt destabilize the Govt: Saleng

SHILLONG, SEPT 9: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief and Gambegre legislator Saleng A Sangma said that the Congress’ decision to move a resolution for the removal of the Assembly Speaker is an attempt to destabilize the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government.

“Any opposition will always try to destabilize the government. It is the nature of politics so that way Congress is also trying their best to do whatever they can (to destabilize the government),” Sangma told reporters on Thursday.

The opposition is all set to move a resolution seeking the removal of the Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh during the autumn session of the Assembly, which will commence from September 10.

Sangma however said that he cannot say anything much on the resolution since he is yet to see the content and know the reason which made the Congress go against the Speaker.

Asked, the Gambegre legislator said that he does not see anything wrong in the functioning of the Speaker.

“The role of a Speaker is within the House and within the House he is okay till date nobody has questioned his performance,” he said.

If the Congress has approached him for his support on the resolution, Sangma said, “Of course I will go with the MDA since I’m not in the opposition.”

On Wednesday, the MDA meeting chaired by the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma had unanimously resolved to vote against the resolution of the Congress.
