SHILLONG, NOV 17: Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju lauded the achievement of the Assam Regiment during the glorious 75 years of its existence during the celebration of its platinum jubilee at the Regiment centre in Shillong.

During his address to the soldiers, he also congratulated Lt Gen Subrata Saha, Colonel of the Assam Regiment and Arunachal Scouts and all ranks of the regiment for spearheading the enviable saga of honour, glory and sacrifice in its service to the nation.

After addressing, the  minister attended the inaugural ceremony of late Havildar (Hav) Hangpan Dada main office block.  Hav Hangpan Dada had laid down his life while fighting the militants in the valley in May 2016.  He was awarded Ashok Chakra (Posthumous) for exhibiting exceptional bravery, beyond the call of duty.

The inauguration was done by Mrs Chasen Lowang Dada widow of the martyr.  The minister also paid homage to the fallen heroes of the Regiment by laying wreath at the magnificent War Memorial, PRO defence group Captain Amit Mahajan informed on Thursday.

The  minister inaugurated the refurbished state of the art ‘Bishnu’ Museum at the centre.  This museum preserves and showcases the rich heritage and achievement of each battalion and motivates and instills a sense of pride in each individual soldier.

The minister also ‘flagged in’ the Motorcycle Rally, which returned back to Shillong after visiting and paying homage at the Regiment’s war memorials at Kohima, Jessami, Aradura and  Imphal.

The rally covered a distance of 1700kms over 14 days.  The expedition team met veterans of the Regiment en route and also interacted with school & college students motivating them to join the army.

After felicitating the Veer Naris (widows of gallant soldiers) and cutting the 75th anniversary cake, the minister joined the soldiers for the traditional ‘Barakhana’ lunch amidst thundering rendition of the regimental song of the Assam Regiment.-By Our Reporter
