Rock capital celebrates World Music Day

SHILLONG, JUNE 21: From traditional folklore songs to jazz, blues, rock and slow metal captivated and mesmerized music lovers of the city, a place which has earned a name for itself as the – rock capital of the country, in a concert held to celebrate the ‘World Music Day’ on Saturday.

Organized by the State Arts and Culture department at U Soso Tham auditorium, the celebration also showcased and preserved the rich cultural and traditional heritage of the three tribes – Khasi, Jaintia and Garo as folklore music and instrumentals competitions were also held in these categories.

Solo artists and bands drawn from across the Khasi-Jaintia and Garo hills participated in the competitions.

A Garo hills based band, which bagged the winner prize, also enthralled the crowd with their unique traditional folklore songs, blending their music with the traditional and modern instrumentals.

Earlier while speaking on the occasion, State Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Zenith M Sangma said, “Music is very essential to each and every one as it is something which makes life worth living.”

Stating music therapy is very good to minimize stress as a killer disease, Sangma said many of us don’t realize how stress can be a killer disease as it can cause diseases by increasing cardiovascular risk and can cause kidney related diseases and affect the people causing complete disturbance in human body system.

According to him, in today’s generation people are all busy and life has become so competitive, but added, “ However busy we may be, we should try our best to make a little time for enjoyable activities everyday which is important for our health.”

Sangma said that music can be one of the best instruments for reducing stress, when people can enjoy and relax or have self satisfaction then happy hormones are released abundantly in the body which is beneficial for the health. He added, “Music is essential for everybody whether poor or rich it does not have any boundary.”

Pointing out that music can open up opportunities for the people opting it as their career, Sangma informed that state government is also showing positive attitude towards this field and is ready to give all necessary support.

In order to promote talents in the state, Sangma informed recently a project of Rs 151 crore has been sanctioned to create one International Cultural Centre in Shillong’s New Township where there will be cultural and other entertainment programmes on regular basis.

Sangma also said with the setting up of such centre there can also be multifarious economic activities making life more attractive and productive.

A musical concert “Music by the Lake” organized by ICCR in collaboration with Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) at the Wards Lake in the city was also held.- By Our Reporter .
