SHILLONG, NOV 2: The state finance department is in the process of releasing the of Rs 2.15 crore for holding the upcoming December 13 bye-elections to the two autonomous district councils – KHADC and JHADC.

District Council Affairs Minister Prestone Tynsong told reporters on Wednesday that the finance department is considering releasing the amount following several requests from the respective deputy commissioners.

However the department is yet to decide whether the expenditure will be fully borne by the respective district councils.

“We will see later whether there can be adjustment from the shares…that will be worked out,” Tynsong said.

The bye elections to the seven vacant seats – 6 in Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and 1 in Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC)- were necessitated following resignations of members last year.

Seven legislators had relinquished the MDC posts after the Prevention of Disqualification (Members of Legislative Assembly of Meghalaya) (Amendment) Act, 2015 was passed by the Congress led MUA-II which seek to end holding of dual posts by MLAs.

The bye elections to the seven vacant seats will be held on December 13 and the date of counting is fixed on December 16.-By Our Reporter
