SHILLONG, OCT 31: The Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) on Monday announced compensation of Rs 6 lakh to the bereaved family of the six who lost their lives in an electrocution case at Nongthymmai Neng, Lyngiong village in East Khasi Hills District.

Officials of the MeECL have also termed the sad incident as one of the “rarest of the rare” case.

“Compensation of Rs 6 lakh will be paid to the family of the deceased victims within one week,” MeECL chairman PS Thangkhiew told reporters on Monday.He also expressed deepest sympathy and condolences to the members of the bereaved family.

A pregnant woman and her five children, including a seven-month-old baby, were killed when their tin-made house was electrified after an alleged short circuit on October 27.

The deceased woman has been identified as Trisdolin Shangpliang (35) while the children who perished along with her were Kamustar (9), Sngewbhalang (6), Bedingstar Shangpliang (5), Sisharlin (2 years 6 months), and the seven-month-old baby boy. The funeral was held on Friday last.

When asked, Thangkhiew said preliminary inquiry have pointed out that the cause was due to “lightning” and it is said to be one of rarest of the rare case since the transformer was 350 meters away from victims’ house.

“However we are still examining the inquiry report,” he said.

Meanwhile, a magisterial inquiry into the incident was also ordered by the deputy commissioner of East Khasi Hills District PS Dkhar. The inquiry to be headed by BDOP Mark Challam has been directed to submit the report within a week’s time.-By Our Reporter

    Lightning?? where is the earthing and the lightning arrester?? So tomorrow with much lightning in the State we will get more deaths because of lightning?? This is heights.. and 6 lacs?? just because they are villagers only 6 lacs?? Insult after killing so many of a family due to negligence?? why could they not appoint more staff to cater to such needs when this is the need of the hour instead of appointing all those retired persons who bleed the State when in service and after..
