SHILLONG, AUG 9: The ruling Congress today said the BJP is worse than the British even as it accused the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for opposing the Quit India Movement.

Addressing the foundation day of Indian Youth Congress and also commemoration of the Quit India Movement here, Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress (MPYC) president Richard Marak said, “The RSS and the HIndutva camp not only opposed Quit India Movement but also supported the British in suppressing it.”

His statement also came when the BJP national general secretary (organization) Ram Lal, who is on a 3-day visit to the state, paid rich tribute to U Tirot Sing Syiem, a Khasi legendary freedom fighter, at Fire Brigade in the city, on the occasion of observing the important day.

Marak said that the RSS and Hindu Mahasabha deliberately stayed away from India’s Freedom Struggle and opposed the Quit India Movement while Congress leaders and workers sacrificed and many gave it their lives.

“As an Indian, 75 years on, we should remember the journey of the Quit India Movement, and the people who paved the way for India’s complete independence. Gandhi ji believed and fought for the right and freedom of every Indian,” he said.

He however said that today under the BJP rule; we see intolerance and suppression on personal and religious freedom even as he added, “The British may have left but they left behind the RSS and the BJP.”

“While Congress believes in inclusiveness, the BJP plays divisive politics. They are using the same agenda of divide and rule used by the British. BJP is trying to suppress and oppress our freedom,” Marak said.

“The British never intruded our kitchen, dining table and wardrobe, but BJP is trying to interfere in our personal freedom. Only Congress can fight against this. This is the fight of two ideologies Mahatma Gandhi and Naturam Godse’ s,” he added.

Stating that BJP is worse than the British, the MPYC chief said that the Congress united India for freedom against the British and created India, in this generation we will unite the people again against the BJP’s anti-people policies and the freedom of personal choice.

“We will unite the people and Congress will form the govt in 2018 with more MLAs than 2013. Congress is in our DNA,” he said.

He also went on to speak about the demonetisation and Modi’s false promises and said “Demonetisation is the biggest scam of all time”.

After the programme, black paint was sprayed on Modi and Shah’s picture as a mark of protest condemning the attack on VP Rahul Gandhi’s convoy in Gujarat which neither PM Modi nor his ministers and BJP leaders condemned.

“The BJP goons who were involved in the attack should be arrested and be booked as per the law,” he said while adding that the protest was also against the anti-people policies and suppression.

Earlier, Congress MDC P T Sawkmie spoke about the Quit India movement 1942 led by Father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and the freedom struggle led by the Congress party and its leaders.

He also praised the Congress government under the leadership of Mukul Sangma and highlighted the achievements of the UPA govt and the MUA government.

Sawkmie further lambasted the false promise of the BJP, namely, 15 lakh in everyone’s account, 2 crore jobs every year, crude oil prices and LPG and price rise on commodities.
