Salary hike for CM, ministers, legislators

SHILLONG, MAR 24: The salary of the Meghalaya chief minister, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, members of the council of ministers, and legislators has been increased with the passing of the Meghalaya Legislators Salaries and Allowances (Amendment) Bill, 2017 today.

The Act, which will come into force from January 1 this year, was passed on the last day of the budget session.

“The purpose of the amendment is to revise the existing rates of salaries and other allowances of chief minister, speaker, deputy chief minister, deputy speaker, ministers, parliamentary secretaries and the members of the House,” Minister in-charge Parliamentary Affairs, MM Danggo said.

As per the amended bill, the Chief Minister will now be entitled to taking home a gross salary of Rs 1.09 lakh per month from Rs 64,000 and the deputy chief minister is Rs 1.07 lakh from Rs 63,600.

Moreover, the salaries and allowances of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker have been raised to Rs 1.08 lakh and Rs 1.06 lakh from Rs 63,600 and Rs 62,750.

Cabinet ministers, who were earlier drawing a monthly salary of Rs 63,200, would not get a hike of over Rs 40,000 taking a total salary of Rs 1.07 lakh while parliamentary secretaries is at Rs 1.06 lakh from Rs 62,500.

The leader of opposition’s salary is now fixed at Rs 1.07 lakh from Rs 63,200.

Further, the members of legislative assembly are also getting a hike of Rs 30,000 and will be getting salary of Rs 60,000.

Moreover, the Legislative Assembly of Meghalaya (Members’ Pension) (Amendment) Act, 2017 was also passed by the House witnessing a hike by Rs 13,000.

The pension for former lawmakers is now fixed at Rs 30,000 from earlier amount they are entitled which was at Rs 17,000, besides an additional amount of Rs five thousand.

Danggo said that apart from revising the members’ pension, the amendment is also to revise the medical allowance for the ex-MLAs from the existing rates.
