SHILLONG, JUNE 20: Meghalaya assembly deputy speaker Sanbor Shullai, who is also an MDC, said the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) must take the dorbar shnongs into consideration and consultation while conducting checking drives on trading license which is mandated in the Trading by Non-Tribal Regulation Act.

“It has clearly stated in section 3 (e) of the Act, the important of involving the dorbar shnongs’ in checking trading license or issuing fresh trading license to non-tribal traders within their jurisdiction,” Shullai told reporters at a news conference on Friday

Shullai statement follows the recent allegation leveled by the KHADC’s executive member in-charge of trade Latiplang Kharkongor against him that he had interrupted the checking drive conducted on June 17 by the council’s enforcement official in Laban area.

Terming the allegation as fabricated, Shullai said, “On that day, when on my way home I saw the officials conducting the checking drive and had only enquire from them whether the dorbar shnong authority had been informed or not.” He informed that he had not stopped them, but suggested to the enforcement officials the need to inform the dorbar shnong when such activity is undertaken within the dorbar’s jurisdiction.”

Shulla said the dorbar shnong had informed that they had not received any notice from the KHADC on the checking drive. According to him, the cooperation of the dorbar shnong is required so as to ensure that the checking drive is conducted without any problem.

Shullai said, “It was only after my suggestion, that the under secretary of the KHADC sent the notice to the dorbar shnong of Laban about the matter on the following day which is well appreciated.”

Shullai, however, lamented that the KHADC EM incharge trade had mention in his statement that the district council does not require to inform the dorbar shnong.

Shullai said, “I would suggest to the EM to refer to the proceedings of the house in the past on how the council had agreed to work together with the dorbar shnongs on such issue.”

On the allegation that he is  shielding non-tribal, Shullai said this does not arise as the KHADC as per the Act has every right to conduct checking and take action accordingly against those who failed to obtain trading license for running their business establishments.- By Our Reporter
