Sangma inaugurates the 10th districts

ng, August 3: Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma inaugurated the South West Khasi Hills District Mawkyrwat at the SDO(Civil) Office Complex, Laitlawsang, Mawkyrwat by unveiling the plaque on Friday.

With the inauguration of this new district, Meghalaya now has 10 districts. Earlier when Meghalaya was part of the erstwhile Assam, there was only two districts, the  Khasi-Jaintia hill district and the Garo hills district.

During the Friday inauguration, chief adviser to the Government of Meghalaya Dr D D Lapang and deputy chief ministers Rowell Lyngdoh and Bindo Lanong, ministers, Prestone Tynsong, Ampareen Lyngdoh, Shitlang Pale,  JA Lyngdoh, AL Hek and parliamentary secretaries  Comingone Ymbon, L Rymbui, Francis Pondit Sangma, Donbok Khymdeit, RV Lyngdoh and others were also present.

Chief Secretary WMS Pariat and additional Chief Secretary PBO Warjri among other senior government officials and traditional heads of the area were also present

Speaking at the inauguration Sangma called for active participation of the people of the newly inaugurated district in the developmental schemes initiated by the government of Meghalaya. “Promise us that in the next Olympics, the Indian contingent will have people from Mawkyrwat in it and I will promise you that you will have a sports complex this year itself.”

Sangma  implored upon the people to  promise him that they will produce the best students for which he would reward them with provincialisation  of their college.  He promised them with a good road if they work hard.

Sangma said that government should create more districts to bring the administration closer to the people. He said, “This Government on the first day when it assume office had promised to bring overall development in the State and to address the issues of poverty and also to provide quality education and health facilities in the State.”

Comparing the new South West Khasi Hills district to a new – born baby, Sangma said that it needs care and nurturing and called upon the people of the district to provide this. He said that with the active participation of the people, South West Khasi Hills has the potential to become a model district.
