SBI strike on Monday

SHILLONG, AUG 10: The State Bank of India Officers’ Association (SBI-OA) decided to hold a one-day ‘statewide-strike’ in Meghalaya on Monday to protest against the state government’s failure to provide security to the employees serving in the five districts of Garo hills region.

The decision was taken after the recent abduction of the SBI staff Subodh Kumar Mishra from Gasuapara branch by armed militants.

“All the SBI branches throughout the state of Meghalaya will remain close on August 11, in view of the recent abduction of our staff from Gasuapara branch in Garo Hills,” SBI-OA convenor said in a statement issued on Sunday.

The association said, “We have seen that even after several abduction cases of our staff members in particular and the innocent public in general, the state government has not taken any constructive steps to protect us, especially those who are serving in the rural areas.”

“Therefore, we are compelled to call the one-day strike, in order to bring to the notice of the government that we will not take such repeated act of abductions, threats, extortions against our employees lying down and also to ensure the safety and security of all our staffs members throughout Meghalaya,” the statement stated.

The association also expressed regret the inconvenience caused to the general public and appeal to them to bear and understand the problem faced by the bank employees.- By Our Reporter
