School kids treated as beast of burden

bagSHILLONG, JULY 20: Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) expressed concern over school children being treated like beasts of burden as they are made to carry school bag containing books and copies almost equal to their weight.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, KHNAM – state youth wing president Thomas Passah said, “It is a matter of serious concern that children especially those at a tender age have to carry heavy bags while going to school, which will affect their health.”

In fact, such a heavy load puts a heavy burden on their mental as well as physical growths – as we all are aware that children apart from pencil books, copies, pencil box, compass box are also carrying lunch box, water bottle and others, he said.

He said the party urges the state government, especially the education minister, to address this problem faced by the children by having a consultation with the different educational institutions and find ways and means to reduce the burden of children having to carry such heavy bags.

Stating that the issue is not confined only to Meghalaya alone but in other states as well, the KHNAM-SYW president said, in view of this, there has also been a PIL filed with the Mumbai High Court in which a direction was issued to the Maharashtra government to constitute a committee.

Subsequently, this committee had submitted a report having at least five point findings and 44-point recommendations. As per its report, over 58% of children under the age of 10 years are suffering from ‘mild muscle pain’, he said adding the committee had recommended the need to have only 3 subjects a day of which the Maharashtra government is implementing at present.-By Our Reporter
