‘Scrap ordinance: KSU

SHILLONG, JUNE 1: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Sunday has demanded that the state government scrap the ordinance even as it said the two “crucial” sub sections in the rectified Village Administration Bill, which were removed as per government’s suggestion, must be retained.

“The government should immediate scrap off the ordinance,” KSU general secretary Auguster Jyrwa said in a statement issued on Sunday.

The demand came a day after the rectified KHAD (Village Administration) Bill, 2014 was passed at a special session convened by the KHADC, after 23 corrections were approved.

According to him, the Meghalaya Local Administration (Empowerment of Traditional Institutions, Traditional Bodies and Headmen in Governance and Public Delivery System) Ordinance, 2015 is very much against customary laws of traditional institutions including dorbar shnong, hima and raid.

“This ordinance seeks to open up opportunity for outsiders to easily get residential certificate without verification or providing valid documents,” he said.

Meanwhile, the KSU also expressed opposition against the decision of the KHADC to remove two sub-sections (VIII & XVI) of Section 5 from the original draft VAB passed last year.

“We demand that the state government should reconsider its suggestions by retaining these two important sub sections in the rectified Bill before sending it to the Governor for his assent,” Jyrwa said.

According to him, the demand is in view of the fact that the two sub sections seeks to protect the interest of the indigenous community and its people and regulate entry of outsiders into their lands.

The KSU also threatens to take recourse to other and means if the state government fails to comply with its demand.-By Our Reporter
