Security beef up ahead of I’ Day celebrations

SHILLONG, AUG 10: Security has been beefed up in the state ahead of the Independence Day celebrations and following the reported jihadi activities in Assam being considered as a ‘national threat’.

“The state police have reviewed all the security arrangements and necessary steps have been taken to see that the celebrations of Independence Day will be a success,” Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui told reporters.

He said that the police department is taking necessary steps to see that safety and security of the state is of paramount in line of reports that Assam is one of the states where some anti-social elements or Jihadi groups are operating.

“The police department is taking extra step so that those anti-social element or Jihadi groups have no place in the state,” Rymbui assured.

His assurance came in the wake of NGOs expressing concern that Jihadi groups may use Meghalaya as a safe haven in absence of effective laws like the ILP and MRSSA to check entry of people from outside into the state.

Rymbui further informed that sharing of inputs between the central agencies or other states are being done because such activities is not a threat only to Meghalaya but is a threat to national security.

“The coordination between different states and between different central agencies is being done so that no element which puts the unity and integrity of the country at any risk has any place in India or in the state of Meghalaya,” he said.
