SHILLONG, JAN 7: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday said the setting up of entry-exit points to check influx and illegal immigrants in some locations will soon start.
After chairing a meeting to review the status of the different locations especially those identified under the first phase here, Sangma said, “…in some locations we will even be able to start the work in matter of a month or two or in couple of months.”
He also informed that the revenue and tourism departments have been working very hard on the matter and the government is in fact at the end of completing the land acquisitions.
“We have also looked at options and ways on how we can speed up the work for acquisition in other locations also but I should say that it was a fruitful meeting and we are very happy with the progress of the work,” Sangma said.
The chief minister further assured that his government is very serious on this issue and said, “We are continuously reviewing it and we should be able to come up with the result in these areas very very soon.”
The proposed setting up of entry and exit points across the state was mandated by the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, 2016 passed by the state government as part of the anti-influx comprehensive mechanism.
Following the delay by the government for the past 4 years, the 13 pro-Inner Line Permit (ILP) groups had earlier threatened to set up their own entry-exit points to check influx and illegal immigration into the state.
