Shillong Municipal staff agitates for arrear, salary

smbShillong, November 20: Employees of the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) on Wednesday staged a black flag day protesting against the delay in releasing their arrears and salaries.  The black flag day protest is part of the three-day agitation called by the Shillong Municipal Employees’ Association (SMEA) to pressurize the state government to immediately address their grievances.

Employees of the SMB were seen wearing black badges during office hours as mark of protest.

The SMEA has been demanding that the government pay the arrears to the employees of the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) as per the revised pay of the state government and also ensure that the salary of the staff is not disbursed late.

Speaking to reporters, SMEA general secretary Paul Marwein said, “Instead of calling us for talks, the government has ordered the office to provide the names of the members of the association who are wearing the black badges during office hours.”

Marwein stated following the failure of the urban affairs minister Ampareen Lyngdoh to response to their demands, the association has decided to meet chief minister Mukul Sangma next week to apprise him of their grievances.

“If the outcome of the meeting with the CM is not negative, we will be forced to sit and decide our future course of actions,” Marwein said.-By Our Reporter
