Shillong roads unsafe, 218 people killed in 5 yrs

traffic1SHILLONG, JAN 16: In the last five years two hundred and eighteen people have lost their lives in the greater Shillong in road accidents making Shillong roads vulnerable to mishaps. The traffic data shows that there were 206 accidents in 2012 and fifty six people were killed. In 2013 till September there were 152 accidents with thirty two people being killed.

To create an awareness among people on safe driving, the Shillong Traffic police  in collaboration with Shillong Region Taxi Operators and Drivers Association organized a rally on the occasion of road safety week on Thursday.

Hundreds of local taxis, government buses and private vehicles with placards  on safe driving took part in the rally  that began from polo parking and went to different areas of the town.  The road safety week which aims to create awareness about safe driving  is of utmost importance in view of the ever increasing road accidents in Shillong town.

Speaking to newsmen about the awareness, the East Khasi hills  SP (Traffic) NK Syiem  said that the Shillong Traffic police   (STP) is creating awareness on the road safety through placards He said that in recent times, lot of cases of pedestrians being hit by vehicles have been reported from the town which is a matter of concern to the traffic police.

The traffic police are also taking the help of Meghalaya Integrated Information System (MIIS) to display road safety messages in the electronic boards that have been installed in different parts of the town.

Syiem appealed people to follow the traffic rules for theirs and others safety

If one goes by the data, there were altogether 800 accidents in greater Shillong area since the 2009 to September 2013 out of which 186 were fatal accidents.- By Our Reporter
