Shops downs’ shutter

SHILLONG, FEB 5: Shops and business establishment in Nongthymmai pyllun that includes Rynjah were close for three hours from 11am to 2 pm Tuesday to pay respect to Williamnagar assistant jailor Neil Warjri and Warden SS Thabah who were gunned down by militants on Saturday.

The call for keeping the shops close for three hours was given by the Khasi Students Union (KSU). It evoked total response in these areas.

The KSU will also organize ‘black-flag-march’ on February 8, to protest against the failure of the state government to provide ‘security’ to the Khasi population serving in the militant-infested Garo hills region.

The February 8 black flag march will be taken part by several prominent ngos of Khasi – Jaintia hills.

“We have decided to take out a peaceful march to show our protest against the inability of the government to provide adequate security to the Khasi people working in the different parts of Garo hills region,” KSU general secretary Auguster Jyrwa said.

Saying that the march is to demand ‘adequate-security’ arrangement for the Khasis, Jyrwa, however, warned, “If the government failed to comply with the demand, then we would be compel to force the government to recall  the Khasi employees working in militant infested Garo hills.”

Jyrwa said majority of the Khasis working in Garo hills are gripped with fear psychosis due to the frequent attacks by militant groups operating in the region.”  The February 8 march will start from the KSU’s office to the Meghalaya secretariat and later the leaders of the NGOs are expected to meet the chief secretary WMS Pariat to discuss the security issue.- By Our Reporter
