SHILLONG, JULY 24: Opposition PDF Nongskhen MDC Grace Mary Kharpuri today accused the KHADC chief Hispreaching Son Shylla of attempting to “hush up” the issue related to the alleged misappropriation of Rs 28 crore to shield people from his own constituency.
Her statement came as a strong reaction to the allegation made by Shylla that her demand for a CBI probe into the misappropriation of Rs 28 crore sanctioned by the Centre was “baseless”.
Kharpuri had earlier alleged that the amount was diverted by the former KHADC chief executive member PN Syiem, also the PDF chairman, for council’s assets instead of earmark the same for development of different constituencies, without the knowledge of the EC.
Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, the PDF Nongskhen MDC said, “It seems that the Shylla-led KHDA executive committee was just using the issue (Rs 28 crore) to get power in the KHADC.”
Claiming that she has with her the names of contractors who were alloted works under the Rs 28 crore, Kharpuri alleged, “There is something behind the decision of Shylla to change his words on the issue. He is trying to shield somebody as there is one particular contractor who is from Laitkor but I am not willing to disclose here.”
She also recalled that it was Shylla himself who had stated in the floor of the House recently that the former CEM was demanding commission from contractors who are implementing the works related to the council’s assets.
Maintaining her stand on the issue, Kharpuri said, “I stick to what I said that decision to divert the fund for council’s assets was taken without the knowledge of the EC and without floating any advertisement despite the presence of a tender committee.”
She further stated that if the KHDA-led executive committee was formed for the interest of the people, then it should do something about this while pointing out that the case relating to misusing of the professional tax amounting to Rs 2 crore is still pending till today.
