SHILLONG, FEB 8: Director General (Prison) Prem Singh took over as the new Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) on Friday from his predecessor Kulbir Kishan. Singh had been an acting Meghalaya DGP before but later demitted the office of the top cop when a regular DGP was appointed by the Meghalaya government.

A low profile, soft spoken and media shy police officer; Singh was catapult to the top cop job of Meghalaya after the Election Commission of India (ECI) removed Kulbir Kishen as Meghalaya DGP just ahead of the February 23 state assembly elections.

Kishen was removed on the basis of complaint lodged against him from some quarters that he was not politically neutral.

Prem Singh, who is known for his integrity, has been appointed at a very crucial juncture as the Meghalaya DGP as the state is going to polls on February 23. Moreover, there are apprehensions that the elections in militants infested Garo hills might not be as “free and fair” as the ECI want it to be as some politicians have already been threaten and attacked by militants in Garo hills.

The job before the new DGP is cut and dry. He step up security and ensure that the militants belonging to the Garo National Liberation Council (GNLA) and A’chik National Volunteers’ Council (ANVC-B) are neutralize and are not allowed to meddle in the election process.

Media shy by nature, Prem Singh refuse to talk to the media after taking over the mantle of the new DGP of Meghalaya.- By Our Reporter
