SHILLONG, JULY 11: The state police have constituted a special investigating team (SIT) to conduct a thorough investigation into the petrol bomb attack on the office of the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC).
The SIT will be headed by the Superintendent of Police (City) S Rynjah and the Investigating Officer is from the gazetted rank.
On Tuesday morning, the office of the MPSC came under attack when miscreants lobbed a petrol bomb at the room of the commission’s secretary damaging important documents, computers and others.
The FIR filed by the MPSC secretary WAB Booth had stated that the chowkidar of the office had came across two unidentified persons running down the stairs from the first floor as he was heading towards her room on seeing smoke emitting out of the window.
Speaking to reporters, SP (City) S Rynjah said, “We have constituted a special investigating team to investigate into the case.”
Asked, he said informed that the CCTV footage received from one of the locations near the MPSC building did captured two unidentified persons while they were running after coming out of the building.
“We are doing an assessment of the CCTV footage, which shows that there were some activities but since it is so far away so we will have to use some enhancers to try and get the identity of the persons,” the SP said.
Stating that the SIT has already started the process of investigation, Rynjah said that they are investigating the case from all angles.
“We are looking into everything even the employees and everyone who are working there from every angle to see whether if there is any involvement from inside the department or people from outside or may be some disgruntled candidates of certain exams – we are looking from all angles,” he said.
He said that the team has also started taking statements of people adding so far, police are yet to make any arrest in connection with the case.
Whether the MPSC had received any threats in the past, the SP said there was no report of threatening incident.
“We have spoken to the MPSC chairman and secretary and they told us that they have never received any threats but except two months back there was a fake result being circulated and an FIR was lodged and is under investigation,” he said.
As per preliminary investigation, the SP revealed that petrol bomb attack on the office was a pre-planned.
“It was definitely a pre-planned. I believe somebody have watched this routine very closely or somebody from inside have passed the information of the daily activity of the chowkidar,” he said.
Admitting that there was no CCTVs installed in the building, he said there is a need to install CCTV since the Horse Shoe building is an important building as it is not only housing the office MPSC but other important departments as well.
Meanwhile, the SP said for security reasons, the police department had earlier written to many government departments that they should CCTVs installed in their respective offices and premise.
