Six females arrested, security tightened

SHILLONG, MAY 29: Six females and one male have been arrested by the police after the scuffle between the crowd who came out of the HYC meeting and the security forces.

Security in and around Shillong city has also been tightened after the police lathi-charged when a procession was taken out passing through Barik point after the HYC meeting.

East Khasi hills SP M Kharkhrang on Friday said that lathi-charge was resorted after unruly crowd violated the section 144 CrPC imposed in the area which also led to assault of police personnel including the SP city.

“They (crowd) were not supposed to take a procession after meeting. They took out a procession. They were told that Sec 144 CrPC was in force but tried to break through our cordon and even assaulted our officers and woman police,” SP M Kharkrang claimed.

He said, “Police has taken a legal action by resorting to mild lathi-charge.”

Kharkhrang also clarified that those who were injured during the lathi charge is most because of fall when they ran.He also said, “Even the SP (city) Vivek Syiem was also assaulted by the unruly crowd which includes females.”

The SP said, 6 females and one male was also arrested.

The district administration had imposed Section 144 CrPC in and around Barik point, the venue of the hunger strike protest by former KHADC chief Adelbert Nongrum preventing unauthorised gathering of people in the area since it was near the hospital.- By Our Reporter
