Six GNLA surrendered

TURA, OCT 6: Six hardcore Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants led by an area commander on Monday surrendered before Meghalaya police at a ceremony held at West Garo hills SP’s office in Tura.

The militants surrendered before IGP (western range) H Nongpluh in presence of SP Mukesh Singh, deputy commissioner, Pravin Bakshi and commandant 5th Meghalaya battalion Aditya Goenka and other senior officials.

The militants who surrendered are – Manan Ch. Sangma, 30 alias Kimpret, area commander of Dadeng, Kasan Ch. Marak, 20 alias Habraghat, Simarong S. Sangma, 24 alias Sainal, , Chakseng Ch. Marak, 24 alais Malran, Jemistar D. Sangma, 21 alias Deniram and Tengku S. Sangma, 19 alias Watcheng.

Most of them are recruits of 2010 batch and were trained in Durama hills in Meghalaya’s Garo hills.

“We are happy to welcome our young friends back to normal life, who have realised that it is no point fighting and indulging in violence”, said Nongpluh, while welcoming the militants who surrendered.

Nongpluh also appealed to other militants of insurgent outfits to follow their path and come forward and live a normal life. “We would be happy to welcome insurgents, who are in the jungle. We appeal to them to eschew violence and avail the benefit of government’s rehabilitation package”, he added.

The cadres surrendered with AK-56 with 2 magazines, 82 live rounds of AKs, two 7.65 pistol with 2 magazine and 12 rounds of 7.65 pistol, and one highly explosive grenade.

“The militants will be kept in Meghalaya police battalion for three days. A rehabilitation package will be worked out for them to lead a normal life”, said Mukesh Singh, SP.

Singh also informed that the militants were brought by the police from Rongbakgre village, near Jengjal about 25 km from Tura in West Garo Hills. “We were communicated their willingness to come forward and lead normal life”, he added.- From Our Correspondent
