Online fraudster arrested

SHILLONG, JUNE 10: Twenty six year old Anju Gurung, from Sikkim working in Delhi, was arrested by East Khasi hills district police from New Delhi and brought to Shillong for her involvement in cheating a resident of Mylliem or Rs lakhs through a social networking site.

East Khasi hills SP M Kharkrang said  a woman from Mylliem recently lodged an FIR to the effect that she befriended one William through facebook in which he enticed her to deposit sums of money into different accounts on different occasions which amounted to Rs 3 lakhs but later realized that she had been cheated.

“Immediately, the investigation officer (IO) of the case Inspector BK Mishra took up with the banks to freeze the different accounts where the victim had deposited the money,” Kharkhrang said adding “The IO managed to freeze an amount of about Rs1lakh.”

Police also started tracked the suspects and to Sikkim and then New Delhi.

After a pain staking effort, Kharkrang said, Mishra managed to arrest one of the account holders with the help of Delhi police and brought her to Shillong on transit remand.

“The accused have been identified as Anju Gurung (26) of Sikkim and working in New Delhi and presently is in police remand. Other accused persons are still evading police arrest,” Kharkhrang informed.

Kharkhrang urged the public, especially females, not to be enticed into depositing money with any strangers whom they befriend through Internet. “Though police is committed to arrest the accused persons in spite of all odds however, it will be unfortunate for the public to lose away money in spite of repeated warning from the police, he added.- By Our Reporter
