SOMALA on Aadhaar

SHILLONG, SEPT 5: The various ngos on Monday demanded the state government ask the centre to ensure that Aadhaar enrolment in the state should be as per the ‘o of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. The ngos under the banner of the Social Organizations of Meghalaya against Land Alienation (SOMALA) was reacting to recent reports where the centre has set December 2017 as the deadline for 100% enrolment of Aadhaar.

In a statement, SOMALA convener W Anthony said, “We expect the state government to take up with the central government the appropriate enrolment of Aadhaar as per the Sixth Schedule philosophy.

He said that the question arises whether the state government has raised the issue of Sixth Schedule status of the state of Meghalaya where 100 % enrolment at this stage does not arise.

“Constitutionally the Aadhaar enrolment is to be done in accordance with the norm of the Sixth Schedule,” Anthony stated.

Meanwhile, the SOMALA also expressed its eagerness to hear the response of the different political parties on the Aadhaar enrolment in the state in the context of the Sixth Schedule, he added.-By Our Reporter
