SHILLONG, OCT 28: Union minister of state (Independent Charge) youth affairs and sports Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the Games Secretariat of the 12th South Asian Games, 2016 at Tennis Court Complex in JN Sports Complex, Polo Ground on Wednesday.
Meghalaya sports and youth affairs minister Zenith M. Sangma, Meghalaya chief secretary PBO Warjri, union secretary (Sports) department of sports Rajiv Yadav, secretary general, organising committee of the 12th South Asian Games 2016 Jarnail Singh, Chief Executive Officer of 12th South Asian Games RK Sharma, Joint Director General of 12th South Asian Games 2016 RK Sacheti and a host of other officials from the state government were also present.
Stating that Shillong has always carried a special status in the map of India, Sonowal said, “We should jointly take up the responsibility and make good use of the opportunity to make this grand event a success.” He also said that the South Asian Games will benefit the budding talents of the country especially from the north eastern region as this is a platform for those youth who wants to excel in the area of sports.
It may be mentioned that out of the 23 sports disciplines in the 12th South Asian Games 2016, 7 disciplines will be held in Shillong while the other 16 disciplines will be held at Guwahati.
During the programme, a dance group from Mawphlang presented “Ka Shad Suk Mynsiem” and another group from Mawkyrwat enthralled the audience with their flawlessly choreographed and finely composed drum rendition.
FR Kharkongor, Meghalaya secretary of sports & youth affairs department delivered the welcome address.
Earlier in a day, Sonowal attended a review meeting on preparedness of the state government for the 12th South Asian Games 2016 at Hotel Pinewood.-By Our Reporter
